The 22-year-old woman died after the encounter with Iran’s morality police. The death sparked large demonstrations in Iran.
29 people and groups receive the sanctions, writes Reuters. These are to be linked to what the US Treasury Department refers to as “violent repression” during the demonstrations in Iran.
“The United States, along with the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and our other allies, will continue to take joint action against those who oppress the human rights of Iranians,” said Brian Nelson, Deputy Secretary of State for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, in a statement on Friday.
Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt says the government will continue to raise their concerns with Iran and at the UN.
– One year after Masha Amini’s tragic death and the large protests that followed the death, the human rights situation in the country is still serious, says Huitfeldt in a press release.
– Iran must respect freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, the statement says.
