Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The technology war between the United States (US) and China is now spreading to other regions. Most recently, the Joe Biden administration also imposed restrictions on exports of chip technology to Middle Eastern countries.
This was revealed directly by the US chip giant, Nvidia. The manufacturer said US authorities had requested that exports of advanced chips be restricted to the Middle East, although Nvidia did not specifically mention the country in question.
Allegedly, this policy follows US concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Currently, the US is still the dominant country leading the development of AI.
However, China and other countries including the Middle East also boast that they will aggressively develop AI technology.
The US had previously banned the export of advanced chip manufacturing technology to China, to hinder the development of AI in Xi Jinping’s country. Nevertheless, China’s semiconductor industry is working towards achieving self-sufficiency in the application of AI.
So far, the US has limited shipments of advanced chip technology to China, Russia and most recently the Middle East region, quoted from CryptopolitanMonday (2/10/2023).
Although it was not specifically revealed which Middle Eastern countries were affected, there were rumors that mentioned Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Qatar and Israel could also be ‘victims’ of Joe Biden’s boycott because of their close relationship with Chinese technology companies.
It is known that Chinese manufacturer Huawei is also increasingly expanding its business in the Middle East market. The US seems worried that this could potentially lead to espionage and technology transfer.
