The US House of Representatives passed an amendment to reduce Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s salary to $1 per month, writes the Washignton Examiner. The document was published on the chamber’s website.
The majority of seats in the House are held by Republicans. The amendment was adopted under the “Holman Rule,” which allows congressmen to reduce the salaries of specific federal employees. The document was discussed as part of the annual defense appropriations bill, the final adoption of which is scheduled for September 28.
“This is different from impeachment. You are completely taking away their salary and essentially firing them.”[Остин] completely failed, absolutely failed, and by passing the Holman Rule today, the amendment will allow us to fire him,” explained the author of the initiative, a Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
On X (formerly Twitter), she explained that the claims against the minister are related to the “horrific withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan,” a reduction in the number of recruits, and the dismissal of military personnel for refusing vaccination against COVID. She felt that Austin “let the army and America down” and was unworthy to lead the US Department of Defense.
Despite endorsing the amendment, Greene warned that she would vote against defense spending and government and foreign affairs bills because of the Ukraine aid clauses.
Austin’s net worth is $7 million, Forbes estimated in 2021. He earned most of the money from positions on the boards of defense companies.
