WASHINGTON, Feb 18 (Reuters) – Russian military intelligence is behind recent cyberattacks that disrupted Ukraine’s banking system and government websites, a U.S. official said on Friday.
Anne Neuberger, deputy national adviser for cybersecurity issues, told reporters at the White House that the United States intends to hold Russia accountable for its aggressive actions in the digital space.
“Russia likes to maneuver in the shadows and relies on a long chain of attributions,” she said. “In light of this, we are moving quickly to attribute the DDoS (attributed denial of service) attacks. We believe that the Russian government is responsible for the widespread attacks on Ukrainian banks this week.”
The United States has data showing that infrastructure linked to Russian military intelligence, known as GRU, “has been seen transmitting high volumes of communications to IP addresses and domains located in Ukraine”, said says Anne Neuberger.
