US government health advisers indicated that some Americans who received Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine should get a half-dose booster to improve their protection against the virus.

The recommendation is not binding, but it represents an important step toward expanding the booster campaign across the country for millions more Americans. Regarding dosage, Moderna’s initial vaccine consists of two injections of 100 micrograms each. But Moderna says a single 50-microgram injection should be sufficient for a boost.
The agency convened its experts on Thursday and Friday to discuss who should receive the boosters and when they would be given to people who received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines earlier this year.
The FDA will use the recommendations of its advisers to make the final decision for vaccine boosters for both companies. If approved, there is another hurdle: Next week, a panel convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will offer more details on which sectors of the population should get the booster shot.
