(AFP, Los Angeles, 15th) The Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted Romania’s appeal on the 10th and changed the bronze medal decision in the women’s gymnastics floor event at the Paris Olympics. The original winner, American gymnast Chelsea, said on the X social platform today that taking out the bronze medal was shocking, heartbreaking, and an unfair blow.
The 23-year-old from Los Angeles also said she has been left very hurt by a barrage of attacks on social media as she tries to recover from the finals controversy.
On the day of the competition, Jordan Chiles’ difficulty score was revised due to a coach’s complaint, which allowed her to rise to third place in the floor event. But Romania appealed, saying that the deadline for the appeal had been exceeded. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that the United States had exceeded the time limit, and the International Association of Athletics Federations ruled that Romanian substitute Ana Barbosu won the bronze.
USA Gymnastics appealed the decision, citing a time-stamped video as evidence that the time limit had not expired, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the decision because it could not reconsider the decision. USA Gymnastics has promised to take the case to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
“While celebrating my Olympic achievements, I heard the terrible news that my bronze medal has been taken away,” Chelsea said in a statement today on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I was confident in the application submitted by USA Gymnastics, which provided strong evidence that my scores followed all the rules. However, the application was unsuccessful.”
“I am speechless. This decision feels unfair and a big blow not only to me but to everyone who supported this trip.”
“Even more heartbreaking are the racist, unprovoked attacks on social media, this is wrong and very hurtful. I have given my heart and soul to this sport and I am proud to be representing my culture and my country.
Despite the sadness and frustration, Chels said she believes there will be a proper result at some point.
“I’m facing one of the most challenging times of my career… I approach this challenge with the same attitude that I would approach any other difficult situation and I will -everything in my power to ensure that justice is served,” Chelsea wrote.
“I believe that at the end of the journey, the person in charge will do the right thing. ” (Intern Collector: Yang Zhien / Examiner: Zhang Xiaowen)
