MOSCOW – The United States (US) government is considering whether to assassinate the leaders of the new military government in Niger, which seized power in late July.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) revealed this, reported by RT.

“Although the White House is dissatisfied with the events in the former French colony, they do not want to depend on military intervention from Niger’s neighboring countries,” said the assessment released by SVR on Thursday (7/9/2023).

Washington considers a proxy “wetwork” solution to be preferable to military action by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), according to the Russian agency.

ECOWAS has threatened to invade Niger to restore ousted president Mohamed Bazoum to office, but has not acted so far.

French President Emmanuel Macron said last week that his country would support the bloc’s military action.

“Representatives of the American special services are in direct discussions with partners who may have carried out the killings in Niger,” SVR alleged.

The candidates selected were people who had received “special training from the Pentagon school” and belonged to the inner circle of transitional leaders.

The CIA has a record of attempted assassination overseas. Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba and Cuban leader Fidel Castro were the targets of multiple assassination plots in the US, such as those disclosed by the Church Committee in the 1970s.
