US government warns of one-factor authentication

The US government Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added one-factor authentication to the list of things to avoid to be on the safe side.

One-factor authentication means relying on a combination of usernames and passwords, something that is relatively easy for hackers to crack. Not least because many users run with the same password on a variety of services.

CISA also warns against using old programs that are no longer updated, as there is a risk of serious vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers.

The authority flags that more items may be added to the list eventually, including the use of weak encryption and the procedure that most users have administrator rights.
