The US government has revoked a number of permits for drilling for oil and gas in the state of Alaska. These are permits issued by former President Donald Trump on the last day of his term.
In brief
The US government revokes permits for oil and gas drilling in Alaska. President Biden stops the project because of the dangers to nature. He just allows other projects.
A project developer in Alaska, the northernmost state of the United States, wanted to drill for gas and oil at various locations in a large nature reserve. Current US President Joe Biden is now putting a stop to that.
He points out the dangers to the vulnerable nature in the area. Mistakes were also allegedly made, as a result of which the permits were issued incorrectly at the time.
Environmental groups are happy, but there is also criticism. A Republican senator disagrees with the decision, because it will result in job losses and loss of revenue for the local government.
Biden also bans oil drilling in other natural areas
Biden is also criticized for doing this mainly as part of his re-election campaign. The Americans will elect a new president in November next year.
At the same time as the permit was revoked, Biden decided to ban oil drilling in another wilderness area in Alaska. It is part of the nature reserve with the striking name National Petroleum Reserve.
In another part of that nature reserve, the president does allow drilling for oil. Earlier this year, he gave a permit for this, despite fierce criticism from climate groups.
