The US government presented a national security strategy on Thursday to deal with the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI). The National Security Memorandum (NSM) is intended to create the framework for the technology to be further developed to counter the military use of AI by adversaries such as China. On the other hand, clear and effective security measures are provided to strengthen public trust in the use of AI.
“AI clearly has applications in national security, such as cybersecurity and counterintelligence,” said a senior administration official in Washington. Countries like China have recognized the opportunities to use AI to “modernize and revolutionize their own military and intelligence capabilities.”
The US services believe that rapidly developing AI technology will trigger military and intelligence competition between world powers. It is therefore critical that the United States accelerate the adoption and use of state-of-the-art AI capabilities by the national security services “to maintain our competitive advantage,” the administration official said.
A year ago, US President Joe Biden commissioned the National Security Council and the White House Chief of Staff to draft the memorandum. “We believe that we must be superior to our adversaries and defuse the threat of adversarial use of AI,” said the government official. The memorandum is intended to ensure that US authorities “accelerate application in an intelligent and responsible manner.”
