The United States has given an additional $250 million in weapons and equipment to Ukraine. This may be the last financial support to the war-affected country.
The support includes large quantities of missiles and ammunition for various defense and offensive systems. US President Biden has asked Congress to authorize another $61 billion in aid to Ukraine, but Republicans are opposing this. The intended billions must be part of a larger support package, which also includes aid to Israel.
According to Secretary of State Blinken, it is “absolutely necessary” that Congress acts as quickly as possible to approve a new aid package.
Internal politics
Since the Russian invasion of the country in February 2020, the US has provided a total of 110 billion in aid. But nothing has been added since January this year; Since the beginning of 2023, Republicans have had a majority in the House of Representatives. They refuse to release more money as long as the Democrats do not make concessions on migration policy. Another factor is that Republican voters are hardly interested in extra support for Ukraine anymore because the country is hardly achieving any successes on the battlefield.
Experts warn that American weapons and ammunition are essential for Ukraine to resist the Russians on the battlefield.
European support to Ukraine is also in doubt. Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, an ally of Russian President Putin, has so far blocked the European aid plan. New support will be discussed during a European summit in February.
