Manila – The United States will provide an additional $1 million in humanitarian assistance to the Philippines after Super Typhoon Pepito (international name Man-Yi) wreaked havoc in Luzon over the weekend, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III said on Monday. – klajoo.com – Austin is currently on an official trip to the Philippines, where he was also present at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Combined Coordination Center at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, which will enhance interoperability between the U.S. and Philippine militaries.
“At today’s groundbreaking ceremony, I also announced that the United States will provide $1 million in additional funding to the Philippines in light of the sixth severe storm in the past two months. Our military stands ready to provide life-saving assistance to expedite relief to the Filipino people,” Austin III said in a post on X.
“This new support is in addition to the $5.5 million already provided to the Philippines by USAID (US Agency for International Development) since September. We have also brought help to affected areas before. We will continue to stand with the Filipino people during this time,” he added.
Austin also paid a courtesy call on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. at the Malacañang Government Palace, where he noted how Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites have assisted in the government’s disaster response during the recent storms.
“Thanks to the EDCA sites, we were able to do our job better than we would have done otherwise,” Marcos Jr. said, adding, “And the EDCA sites became staging areas because right after the storm, many areas were only accessible by helicopter could be reached and many roads were closed due to landslides.”
Austin III sent his condolences to the typhoon victims.
“I would like to express our sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers for all those who were harmed by these six severe storms that occurred in a very short period of time,” Austin III said.
With additional support from the US government, the two countries want to continue their relationship in the coming years.
“Our past collaboration, particularly over the last four years, has allowed our alliance to become stronger and better, Mr. President,” said Austin III.
“You mentioned the EDCA locations. That was her vision some time ago. These locations could be used for exactly what you described, providing supplies, food, and other essentials in times of dire need. This would allow us to serve the Filipino population much more quickly and efficiently,” he added.
“Your vision has come true and we are glad we were a part of it,” emphasized Austin III.
He and his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro Jr., defense secretary, also signed the General Security Agreement on Military Information earlier in the day, which will serve as a framework for sharing classified military information between the two countries. – KR
