The US general predicts a civil war in Afghanistan
Washington, Sept. 5, LETA – AFP. A civil war is likely to break out in Afghanistan, General Mark Milly, head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff ‘Committee, said.
In a interview with Fox News on Saturday, the general said that according to his military estimates, a civil war would break out in Afghanistan.
He questioned whether the Taliban would be able to consolidate power and establish an effective public administration.
“I think there is a high probability that a wider civil war could break out, which in turn will lead to conditions that could lead to the rebirth of Al Qaeda or the growth of the Islamic State or other (..) terrorist groups,” Millie said.
Stressing that he could not predict what would happen next in Afghanistan, Milie predicted a gloomy picture.
He said it was very likely that terrorism would re-emerge in the region in the next year or three.
Following the withdrawal of the US and other foreign military contingents from Afghanistan, the Taliban launched a general offensive operation in August and briefly seized almost the entire territory of the country, but on August 15, the capital, Kabul, fell into their hands.
Taliban control alone has not come under Taliban control, where Taliban opponents have established a center of resistance to the radical Islamist regime.
