US flies first migrants back to Haiti, border closed

The United States has begun returning Haitian migrants gathered under a bridge in Texas. In the past day there have been three flights from San Antonio to Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. This means that 320 people have flown back.

Airplanes are also departing today and tomorrow and from Wednesday there are seven daily flights scheduled, four to Port-au-Prince and three to Cap-Haïtien.

In recent days, an estimated 12,000 people gathered under a bridge in the US border town of Del Rio. Most are from Haiti, but there are also migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The migrants reached the US by crossing the border river from the Mexican town of Ciudad Acuña. The water is so low there that the river is fordable.
