US Farmers to Introduce Vertical Solar Panels for Electricity Generation and Crop Growth

Starting next year, US farmers will begin using the first solar panels placed vertically, allowing them to both generate electricity and continue to grow a variety of crops.

This concept is called in English agrivoltaics (an official term is not yet available in Latvian), and such a solution is already being used in Germany. Namely, double-sided solar panels placed in a vertical position are used. They can absorb solar energy from both sides, but their efficiency could be lower compared to inclined panels.

However, the benefit is that valuable agricultural land is not lost. U.S. farmers are expected to continue growing crops such as carrots and beets among such solar-panel farms. The first solutions will be located in Vermont. There will be 69 panels on one line, and several lines will be placed at a distance of 9m from each other.

For now, information is not disclosed as to how much electricity will be produced in this way, but it is expected that it will be great for those times when energy consumption is lower, and the solution will be able to serve as a source of additional income.
