DAMASCUS – For the umpteenth time, United States (US) fighter jets and Russia engage in confrontation. This time, two stealth fighter jet F-35 nearly collided with two Su-35 fighter jets over Al-Tanf, Syria.
The confrontation took place on August 14. Moscow claims that two American F-35 fighter jets approached two Russian Su-35 fighter jets.
Deputy Head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria, Rear Admiral Vadim Skin, said the Moscow pilots had acted quickly to avoid a collision.
“On August 14, from 12.35 to 12.50, in the Al-Tanf area at an altitude of about 9100 meters, there was rapprochement between two coalition F-35 warplanes and two Su-35 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which were carrying out planned flights along Syria’s southern border. The Russian pilot, who demonstrated high professionalism, immediately took the necessary measures to prevent a collision with the coalition fighter,” he said, as quoted from EurAsian TimesThursday (17/8/2023).
In mid-July, Washington announced the deployment of a dozen US Air Force F-35s to the Middle East to enhance US Central Command (CENTCOM) air capabilities in the region while serving as a deterrent against Iran and Russia.
Currently, the CENTCOM region hosts four fighter squadrons, consisting of two squadrons equipped with F-16 aircraft, one squadron with A-10 aircraft, and one squadron using F-35 stealth fighters.
According to Skin, the coalition is continuously creating dangerous conditions for aviation incidents and escalating the situation in Syrian airspace through such actions.
He added that on August 14, fighter jets and drones of the US-led coalition violated Syrian airspace in the al-Tanf area.
