On Thursday, Trump met the media at another open press conference, this time at his own golf club in New Jersey. There he answered questions from the media for a long time and fired off criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris, Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz – and especially President Joe Biden.
This is the latest in a series of press conferences that Trump has held in a short period of time.
– Trump is trying a little hard to win back the light. That’s what this is all about. His “trick” is always to attract the attention of the media, says US expert and professor at the Norwegian University of Applied Sciences, Hilmar Mjelde, to NTB.
He thinks the problem for Trump is that Harris is beating him on his home turf. She collects the most money, climbs the charts, has the most devoted fans. Trump is losing, says Mjelde.
– Trump is lazy. It has one track and cannot change or update itself. His revelations in the media have lost all news value, he says.

Is Harris protected from interviews?
On Thursday, Harris and Biden held their first joint campaign appearance at the same time after Biden withdrew as a presidential candidate. At a local university in Largo, Maryland, just outside Washington, the crowd was busy thanking Biden as tributes poured in for Harris.
– It’s really resolved for Harris. She has become a much better candidate, says Mjelde.
And while Trump often meets with the media, Harris has so far mostly kept to open campaign events. Mjelde believes that it is a bad sign if Harris is protected from the media.

– It’s a sign that her team thinks she doesn’t handle open interviews very well, but she can’t hide from these interviews much anymore, he says.
He launched nicknames for Trump
At a campaign meeting on Thursday, Biden launched a nickname for the Democrats’ opponent – namely Donald Dump.

– Isn’t it going a bit to Trump’s level with nicknames like that?
– Both Tim Walz’s lying joke about JD Vance and Biden’s ladle kick don’t sit well with all their talk about raising the tone of the political debate. This is also Trump’s legacy to American politics. He dismissed the political debate, and others are following suit, says Mjelde.
Even if the Democrats are right, Mjelde thinks this could be somewhat misleading. The Republicans and Trump tend to be much better off in the decisive swing states than the polls suggest.
– I think this is a 50-50 race. But it’s clear that any candidate would be in Harris rather than Trump’s position now, overall, he believes.
