US expels Russian hacker, Tass reports

MOSCOW (Reuters) – A Russian hacker sentenced in June 2020 to nine years in prison in the United States was deported to Russia and arrested on Tuesday at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow, Russian news agency Tass reported, citing the Russian Interior Ministry.

Arrested in Israel in 2015 and extradited to the United States in 2019, Alexeï Bourkov was imprisoned across the Atlantic for having managed two sites dedicated to facilitating online crimes such as, among others, credit card fraud.

He was also indicted by Russia, which requested his arrest by Interpol, said the spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry quoted by Tass.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow did not immediately comment on reports that Alexei Burkov had been deported. Such prisoner returns are rare because Russia and the United States do not have an extradition treaty.
