“US Embassy in Sudan Evacuated Due to Ongoing Fighting: More Countries Consider Evacuation”

Smoke over the Sudanese capital Khartoum

NOS News

The US military has expelled the staff of the US embassy in Sudan. President Biden has made that known.

The reason for the evacuation is the fighting that has been plaguing Sudan for more than a week. Government forces battle RSF militia. Hundreds of civilians have died.

The RSF says it has assisted in the action. The diplomats and their relatives are said to have left the country in six planes. According to the AP news agency, it may have been about seventy Americans.

President Biden says nothing about the possible help from the RSF. Well, he thanks in a statement Djibouti, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia, countries he said were “critical to the success of our operation”. The US embassy is now closed.

More countries are considering evacuation

The US is the first country to evacuate its diplomats from Sudan. More countries have said they are preparing to do so. Due to the fighting, no air traffic is possible through the airport of the capital Khartoum.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also preparing for an evacuation of Dutch diplomats and citizens. Yesterday it was announced that 134 Dutch people in Sudan have now been called to ask if they want to join a departure organized by the government.
