Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are raising the bar two weeks before the US presidential election, with many voters still divided.
The main concern of American citizens is the course of the economy in the country. In an Associated Press-NORC poll, a majority of voters describe the state of the US economy as “bad” and 7 in 10 say their country is headed in the wrong direction.
The findings also confirm that Trump seems to have lost his advantage on the issue of the Economy, which the majority of voters put above abortion, immigration, crime and foreign affairs.
What new poll shows about the seven “key” states
The Washington Post/Schar School poll on Monday 10/21 showed Harris leading among likely voters in Georgia 51% to 47%, while Republican Trump has a slight lead in Arizona 49% to 46%.
Both findings are within the margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points of the poll, which polled 5,016 registered voters from Sept. 30 to Oct. 15.
Harris also has leads in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, while the poll showed Trump ahead in North Carolina and tied with Harris in Nevada at 48 percent.
However, this poll is not the only one showing the two candidates tied, as other recent polls have shown a close race in seven key states, even though Harris has a national lead, according to some polls. .
Harris – Trump are trying to attract Americans abroad
The Democratic National Committee estimates that 1.6 million Americans living abroad are voting in swing states — which could decide the outcome of the presidential election.
Americans abroad seem to favor Democrats. That’s why for the first time this year the Democratic National Committee offered about $300,000 to diaspora Democrats to help them get Americans to vote.
“This election will come down to the wire and every vote counts,” said Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Maddy Moody. “We will win this election by convincing every registered voter, no matter where they live.”
But Trump is also trying to win the vote of Americans abroad. Earlier this month he pledged to eliminate double taxation imposed on some of them.
“For many Americans abroad, myself included, the only constant contact we have with the US government is through the IRS every April when we have to file our tax returns and pay our taxes,” said Zinon Capron, who lives in Singapore and is registered to vote in New York when asked about Trump’s commitment.
“If a candidate gets serious about tax reform for Americans abroad, that might sway my decision,” he added.
The problem with attracting diaspora Americans – a group estimated at 4.4 to 9 million – is that only a very small percentage of them vote in presidential elections.
Unlike citizens of other countries, Americans cannot go to their country’s embassies on election day to vote. They must send, usually by mail, their vote to the state in which they are registered.
According to the US Elections Program, most Americans abroad typically do not vote: less than 8% of those who voted in the 2020 election, while just 3.4% voted in the 2022 midterm elections.
