US Elections: The seven Greek-Americans are running for seats in Congress as friends or opponents of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris –

On November 5, the eyes of the entire planet turn to the USA, where Americans vote for a new president. However, on the same day, citizens are invited to choose the new members of Congress, who from their position will be able to influence the freedom of movement of the new occupant of the White House.

A total of seven Greek-American candidates are running for election – or re-election – to Congress, and whether they ultimately succeed is considered particularly important for future critical decisions concerning Greek national issues and Greek-American relations. Let’s see who are the seven Greek candidates for Congress:

Chris Pappas: His re-election seems certain

In the State of New Hampshire, specifically in the first district, the member of Congress, Democrat Chris Pappas, is running for re-election. In fact, he also has a leading role in the Hellenic Caucus on Capital Hill.

A key feature of his political agenda is the moderate stance he has adopted on issues related to small and medium enterprises, taxation and the economy. It is noted that he has spoken mockingly about specific policies of President Joe Biden. His opponent, the Republican Russell Prescott, does not seem to be a favorite and to really threaten the Greek-American congressman. In fact, a poll of St. The Anselm College Survey Center points out that Pappas garnered 50% support to his opponent’s 41%.

Mike Haridopoulos: Trump officially supports him

Former state Sen. Mike Haridopoulos is fighting his own battle for Florida’s 8th Congressional District. In 2012 he ran for Congress but did not have the desired results and had retired. Now, he is coming back stronger having previously won the official endorsement of Donald Trump. Haridopoulos is the son of a Greek immigrant who was an FBI agent. His opponent is Democrat Sandy Kennedy, who is not closely related to the iconic US family. Greek-American Haridopoulos appears to have the upper hand on November 5.

Gus Bilirakis: The re-election of Florida is certain

The re-election of Republican Gas Bilirakis seems a given. In fact, he appears to be handily beating Democrat Rock Abujaud Jr. in the 12th Congressional District.

Maggie Goodlander: Winner by 12 points

In the 2nd District of New Hampshire, where the seat has been left vacant after the decision to end Ann Kuster’s parliamentary term, a candidate who is not well known to the general Greek-American public appears for the first time. This is Maggie Goodlander, who stated that she aims to deepen Greek-American relations. Goodlander has a substantial resume, and is connected to the Biden administration as her husband is National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. Based on the polls, Goodlander is expected to have a clear victory in the District, maintaining a 12-point lead over her Republican challenger, Tang Williams.

John Avlon: He’s clashing with his Republican opponent

In the 1st Congressional District, which is located in the “heart” of the state of New York, in Suffolk, former CNN analyst John Avlon, originally from Corfu and Samos, is running with the Democratic Party hoping for a win- upset against Republican Rep. Nick Lalota. According to recent polls, Avlon’s election is considered more difficult than the others, as parts of the 1st District are considered quite friendly to Donald Trump. However, Lalotta in the Sienna College poll is only 3 points ahead (47% to 44%), so no one can rule out an electoral surprise.

Dina Titus: Big lead in Nevada

In Nevada, Greek-American Dina Titus is running for re-election in the 1st District, with a lead over her Republican opponent, Mark Robertson. In fact, in a poll by Emerson University in collaboration with The Hill website, Titus appeared to be leading by 15 points.

Nicole Malliotaki: The Republican “me fora” in Staten Island

In New York’s 11th District, Republican Nicole Malliotaki appears to be ahead compared to the elections in which she was elected in 2020 and 2022. Although Democrats traditionally hold the majority in New York, she remains the favorite. Her opponent is Democratic candidate Andrea Morse, who is considered highly unlikely to be elected, as Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn included in the 11th District map are considered a Republican stronghold.
