US elections, more votes to the Republicans than to Trump and there are those who unmask- Corriere.it

WILMINGTON (Delaware) From the mobile phone and from the pc they come to me, like tens of millions of other Americans who follow him on his sites, Donald Trump’s pounding requests to generously contribute to the fundraising to support the legal costs of appeals for disputes and recounting of votes in the states in which the president was defeated on the wire by Joe Biden.

Trying to prevent the leadership of the country from going to a Democrat should be a battle that engages all Republicans. As the White House in full storm and the Trump campaign sends a task force – son and sister-in-law of the president, Rudy Giuliani and the mastiff adviser Corey Lewandowski – to Philadelphia to oversee a poll that could make the defeat of The Donald certain, Mitch McConnell he cares about something else. Relieved by his reappointment in the Kentucky senatorial seat and by the tenure of Republicans who have not lost control of the Senate, the leader of the Upper House is already thinking about the launch of a package of economic support to counter the crisis induced by the coronavirus. Trump’s son Eric rages: Republicans, show your backbone against this fraud. If you behave like sheep the voters will punish you.

And as Trump’s advisers in the White House begin to talk about a possible reappointment in 2024 – already baptized resurrection run – if the president is forced to leave office, a relieved party begins to wonder if there is some alternative to a future with hands and feet tied to the destinies of the current leader.

The legal battle to block Biden’s way is being fought mostly by the Trump campaign. But the frantic search for funds seems to indicate that the financial contribution of the Rnc, the republican organization, is limited. Trump remains the absolute leader: in these four years he has demolished the old republican establishment and given way to a new group of politicians who follow his populist and sovereign word. But some members of the old guard have survived, like McConnell: a notable from the South who has followed Trump’s footsteps but probably doesn’t love him, given that at the beginning of his term the president had unsuccessfully tried to oust him.

In short, Trump remains the party’s most influential leader by far, but there are those who are beginning to ask if it should also be followed in an extreme choice such as that of reapplying in 2024. Lhe Constitution does not prohibit it, but the only precedent dates back to over a century ago: Grover Cleveland who, after a first mandate and a subsequent defeat, re-nominated (successfully) a second time in 1892.

So far the MPs of the Grand Old Party have followed Trump because they could not give up the tow of his enthusiastic electorate. But Election Day results indicate that the party fared better than its leader, easily winning local majorities even in states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania that Trump lost or is fighting in until the last vote.
