US driver of self-driving Uber car charged with fatal accident | Abroad

A woman who was behind the wheel of a self-driving Uber on trial has been charged with culpable death in connection with an accident in Arizona, USA in 2018, state prosecutors report Tuesday.

The driver was in the self-driving car in Tempe town to intervene, but could not prevent a pedestrian from being killed. It was the first time in the US that a pedestrian was killed as a result of a collision with a self-driving car.

Rafaela Vasquez (46) on Tuesday denied guilt for the death of victim Elaine Herzberg, who suddenly crossed a motorway with a bicycle in the dark at the time of the accident. At the time of the accident, Vasquez was looking down, not at the road, according to Tempe City police. Investigation into the cause of the crash revealed that Vasquez was watching a TV show on her phone. She herself denies that this is the case.

Prosecutors concluded in March last year that Uber as a company could not be sued because of the accident. The tech company behind the well-known taxi app decided in March 2018 as a result of the accident to immediately discontinue all its tests with self-driving cars.
