The U.S. Department of Defense has decided to set up an organization dedicated to the development of a strategy toward China in the field of security.
President Joe Biden announced the plan yesterday (10th), saying he visited the Department of Defense for the first time since taking office and received a report on the Task Force from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
President Biden said in his Pentagon address today that the United States must meet the growing challenges China poses to maintain peace and defend US interests in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world.
“It requires pan-governmental efforts, parliamentary bipartisan cooperation, strong alliances and partnerships,” he said. “This is how we will confront China’s challenges and ensure the American people’s victory in future competition.”
According to the Ministry of Defense, the Task Force consists of no more than 15 civil and military experts, including officials from the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, commanders of combat units, and officials of intelligence agencies. The team is led by Ellie Ratner, a special assistant to the current defense secretary, who served as National Security Adviser to Vice President Biden, a facility in the Barack Obama administration.
The Department of Defense explained that the team will address priorities, including strategy and operational concepts, technology, military deployment and management, intelligence, alliances and partnerships, and defense relations with China, and will make recommendations to the Secretary of Defense within four months.
