US Delivers Confiscated Iranian Ammunition to Ukraine to Fight Against Russian Invasion

Washington DC

United States of America (US) has delivered more than 1 million rounds of ammunition Iran which was confiscated last year, to Ukraine who was fighting against the Russian invasion. The confiscated ammunition was believed to have been supplied by Tehran to Houthi rebels in Yemen, when it was confiscated by Washington.

As reported ReutersFriday (6/10/2023), the delivery of confiscated weapons to Kyiv was announced by the US Military Central Command in a statement on Thursday (5/10) local time.

The US Navy has for years seized weapons believed to have come from Iran and been destined for Tehran-backed fighters in the Yemen conflict. The weapons are usually transported using fishing vessels.

US Central Command, which is responsible for military operations in the Middle East, in a recent statement revealed that around 1.1 million 7.62 mm caliber rounds had been sent to Ukraine.

It was stated that the bullets were initially confiscated by US Navy forces in December 2022, when they were being transferred from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

“The US is committed to working with our allies and partners to counter the flow of lethal aid from Iran in the region, by all lawful means including through US and UN sanctions, as well as through interdiction,” US Central Command said in a statement.

Regardless, according to Reuters, the Iranian munitions are unlikely to make a big difference on the battlefield, especially when long-range weapons and air defense systems are high on Ukraine’s wish list.
