US Customs Seizes Volkswagen Group Cars Due to Suspected Forced Labor Link in Parts from Xinjiang

US customs have seized several thousand Volkswagen Group cars because they found a part that could have been made using forced labor by Uyghurs, the indigenous people of China’s northwestern province of Xinjiang.

It is reported that in the detained cars, which include about 1,000 Porsches, several thousand Audis and several hundred Bentleys, an electronic component was found that could have been made in this way, so they will be stored in customs until the “wrong” part is replaced. It won’t happen so quickly (the expected waiting time is more than a month), but the requirement contained in the law, which prohibits imports from Xinjiang, will be fulfilled. The U.S. believes Uyghurs and other minorities are suffering because of this, a charge China’s ruling party denies.

The Volkswagen plant where the seized cars were released is located in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi, a joint venture with China’s SAIC.

In a statement, Volkswagen said it “takes allegations of human rights abuses both within the company and in its supply chains very seriously,” including “all allegations of forced labor.” The German company has promised to evaluate the incident and does not rule out ending cooperation with the supplier if the investigation confirms serious violations.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has no problem with the zero-display Stronger than Diamonds version of the G-Class, as the manufacturer is certified by the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC), which certifies that the diamonds come from ethically, socially and environmentally responsible sources.
