The United States has launched new attacks on the Houthis in Yemen, destroying three surface-to-air missiles that the Americans said were ready to be fired at ships in the Red Sea. The American armed forces reported this on X. According to the US, the missiles posed a direct threat to shipping, and the latest attacks were therefore in self-defense.

In recent days, the Americans and British have repeatedly attacked Houthi targets in response to rebel attacks on international shipping through the Red Sea. The Yemeni rebel movement says it attacks ships that may have a connection with Israel, in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

“This is the fourth pre-emptive strike the military has conducted against Houthi missile launch facilities,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said. So far, the shelling has not changed the Yemeni rebel movement’s ideas. The attacks on shipping continue. “They still have offensive capabilities, and they’ll continue to utilize them,” Kirby said.

US attacks continue

Last Thursday, President Biden said that the attacks on the Houthis will continue for the time being. “Are they stopping the Houthis? No. But are they continuing? Yes,” Biden said.

The biggest attack by the Americans and the British was last Thursday. Then ships and fighter planes from both powers, with support from the Netherlands and others, attacked about 60 Houthi targets. While the damage to the Houthis was significant, U.S. officials were quick to point out that the rebels still have significant opportunities to launch attacks on shipping.
