The United States has launched airstrikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. According to the Pentagon, it was a retaliation for drone strikes carried out by those militias. US troops and coalition forces in Iraq were the target of the drone strikes.
A statement from the army states that, among other things, a weapons depot has been hit. The posts were reportedly manned by fighters from militias such as Kata’ib Hezbollah and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, who the US says have repeatedly carried out attacks on US targets.
The Pentagon has not disclosed any casualties.
Second series of attacks
“Tonight’s attacks show President Biden’s intent to protect U.S. military personnel,” the Pentagon said in a statement. The White House has not responded.
Speaking to Reuters news agency, two Defense sources say that Iran-affiliated militias have carried out at least five drone strikes on American soldiers since April.
The airstrikes were carried out under the direct command of President Biden. It is the second time since taking office that he has ordered airstrikes against Iran-backed militias. Biden already did that in February, it was about targets in Syria. The Pentagon then warned that Biden would not back down to “protect US troops and coalition forces.”
