US consumer confidence rises in July

Washington. Consumer confidence rose slightly in July in the United States, surprising analysts, but Americans remain uneasy about high prices and high interest rates.

The index measuring confidence stood at 100.3 points in July, compared with 97.8 points in June, the latter figure revised downwards, showed the Conference Board’s monthly survey released on Tuesday.

Analysts expected 99.8 points according to the consensus of briefing.comEconomists polled by Reuters had expected the index to fall to 99.7 from 100.4 before the adjustment.

“While consumers remain relatively positive about the labor market, they remain concerned about rising prices and interest rates, and uncertainty about the future, which may not improve until next year,” said Dana Peterson, chief economist at the Conference Board.

Consumers’ 12-month inflation expectations held steady at 5.4 percent in July. They had peaked at 7.9 percent in 2022.
