US Consumer Confidence Deteriorates in May, According to Conference Board Index

(CercleFinance.com) – US consumer confidence deteriorated in May, according to the index calculated by the Conference Board, which stands at 102.3 for the month just ending, compared to 103.7 ( nevertheless revised from 101.3 in the initial estimate) in April.

“Consumer sentiment on current conditions has become a little less optimistic as their expectations have remained gloomy,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, senior director, economics, at The Conference Board.

This decline in the index from one month to the next is however significantly less than that feared by analysts, like those of Jefferies who anticipated an index falling below the 100 mark, around 98.
