Shou Zi Chew has been the CEO of TikTok since March 2021, and was also the Chief Financial Officer of ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, until November 2021.
Chew was born in Singapore, where he also grew up. After his military service he went to London, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and then worked as a banker for Goldman Sachs for two years. In 2010, he studied for an MBA at Harvard Business School, and did an internship at Facebook.
After working as CFO for the Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi, he moved to ByteDance, the parent company behind TikTok, in March 2021.
