A group of US Republican and Democratic congressmen is preparing a bill to impose sanctions on leading Hungarian political figures associated with Viktor Orban’s government as bilateral relations continue to deteriorate.
Writes about it “European Truth” with reference to The Guardian.
The sanctions bill will contain the names of former government officials and supporters, mostly associated with Orban’s Fidesz party. A specific list of persons is not given.
The bill has been in preparation since last year and is expected to be submitted to Congress as early as May, where officials familiar with the drafting process say it is likely to receive widespread support.
ABOUT the possibility of imposing sanctions against Hungarian officials The media wrote earlier this week. On Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions on International Investment Bank in Budapest and one of his managers, the Hungarian Imre Laszlochka.
U.S. Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman reportedly said on Wednesday that Washington considers Hungary an important ally and concerned about Budapest’s aspirations closer relations with Russia.
In recent months, diplomatic conflicts have continued between the United States and Hungary, primarily related to attacks on the American ambassador. For example, he recentlypointed out Orban’s double standardswho on Twitter publicly supported Donald Trump, who was facing criminal charges in the United States.
The last time the United States imposed sanctions against Hungarians was in 2014, when US bans eight Hungarian current and former officials from entering against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Washington and Budapest.
