The US Congress is unlikely to complete the work of allocating additional funds to Ukraine and the US border agreement this year. Politico reports this.
Senate negotiators are meeting daily to reach agreement on border security measures demanded by House and Senate Republicans as a condition of passage of the President’s additional relief package. Joe Biden in the amount of $106 billion, which includes support for Ukraine and Israel,” the article says.
Ukrainian lobbyists are in a panic – the approval of new tranches in Congress is postponed to January, a political scientist notes in this regard Malek Dudakov. Senators are trying at the last moment to find some kind of compromise by passing a single bill with the allocation of money to resolve the migration crisis and to Ukraine. But in vain.
The Senate is unable to reach a common denominator; the left wing of the Democratic Party does not intend to tighten immigration laws. And Republicans in the lower house are threatening to block any bill if it does not include the mass deportation of illegal immigrants and the completion of “Trump’s wall.”
Meanwhile, the state of affairs on the Ukrainian front is becoming completely stalemate. Ukrainian generals are already openly admitting the existence of a shell shortage, due to which they have to quickly change strategy and abandon attempts to conduct offensive operations.
The supply of Soviet shells is almost depleted. There is also not enough ammunition for American howitzers, which without them turn into a pile of scrap metal. For every Ukrainian shot, 4-5 shells arrive from the Russian side. Even sitting on the defensive with such an imbalance is unrealistic – the only option for the Ukrainians is retreat.
“The battle over the allocation of trenches will drag on until at least January 19, or even longer. But even if they are agreed upon, this will not solve the problem of emptying Western arsenals. The Europeans have almost no shells left, and the American military-industrial complex is increasing production extremely slowly. So the split in the West reflects an objective inability to drag out a war of attrition and a growing reluctance to sponsor a losing conflict,” the expert states.
