US condemns Russia’s ‘brutal tactics’ against opposition protesters

The United States condemns Russia’s “brutal tactics” against opposition protesters, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday, calling for the release of opponent Alexeï Navalny.

“The United States condemns Russia’s continued use of brutal tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists for the second week in a row and renews its call to release those arrested, including Alexei Navalny,” Antony said Bliken on Twitter.

Russian police deployed a major device on Sunday and closed access to the center of several cities during new demonstrations across the country to demand the release of the opponent Alexeï Navalny. According to the organization OVD-Info, which specializes in monitoring protests in Russia, at least 1,643 arrests have taken place in 70 cities, but mainly in Moscow (338). These new demonstrations are taking place against the backdrop of the appearance of Alexey Navalny before judges, scheduled for next week.

The opponent has been the target of multiple legal proceedings since his return to Russia on January 17, which he considers politically motivated. These rallies follow a first day of mobilization last Saturday which brought together tens of thousands of protesters and resulted in more than 4,000 arrests, as well as the opening of about twenty criminal cases.
