US closes famous Arecibo telescope, known from Bond film GoldenEye

The telescope is located deep in the jungle of Puerto Rico, an island in the Caribbean Sea, and has been used over the past 57 years to track potentially dangerous asteroids and to search for extraterrestrial life in the universe.

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced the decommissioning after two accidents in recent months. For example, one of the supporting cables came loose and a hole of 30 meters was created. Something like this happened again at the beginning of this month. If this happens again, according to a hired engineering firm, a ‘catastrophic collapse‘.

GoldenEye

Many people know the telescope from the James Bond movie GoldenEye, but you could have also seen it in the movie Contact, starring Jodie Foster.

Scientists say the telescope played an important role in analyzing asteroid Bennu in 1999. This is a dangerous object for Earth because there is a very small chance that the asteroid could hit our planet between 2175 and 2199. NASA sent a robotic probe here and collected samples there this year. Those monsters coming to Earth in 2023.
