US Clash with France Over Israel-Palestine Conflict

Paris

The Middle East conflict sparked diplomatic tensions between French and United States of America (US) in the forum United Nations (UN). This became the first open tension between the two allied countries since the President Joe Biden took office.

As reported AFP, Thursday (20/5/2021), despite continued rejection by the US, France submitted another draft for a UN Security Council resolution calling for an end to hostilities between Israel and Hamas, as well as calling for humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip.

According to the script obtained AFP, the draft “demands an immediate cessation of hostilities” and calls for “an intensification and acceleration of diplomatic efforts and support for a negotiated two-state solution”.

The manuscript has been circulating among the 15 member states of the UN Security Council, which have until Thursday (20/5) local time to consider it. France has yet to give an indication of when the voting will be held for the draft resolution.

The US is known to have repeatedly vetoed similar resolutions in recent days, insisting it is seeking other ways to resolve the crisis.

France’s latest proposed draft – announced late Tuesday (18/5) evening – quickly drew a strong response from the US that hinted it would return to veto power if needed.

“We are focused on the intensive diplomatic efforts that are being made to end the violence and that we will not support actions that we believe endanger de-escalation efforts,” a spokesperson for the US diplomatic mission at the United Nations said. AFP.
