A total of 9 US cities have become destinations for adult migrants accepting free tickets from shelters in New York, representing just 2% of the total. According to the digital newspaper Gothamist.comwhich accessed official figures due to the transparency law, around 30 migrants a day opt for these flights.
Since the migratory flow began last year, the EFE news agency published, the city has allocated $7.6 million dollars in plane or bus tickets to move approximately 28,500 immigrants to new destinations such as Illinois, Texas, Florida, Colorado, Minnesota, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
But more than 80% of undocumented aliens who lose their shelters, due to the 30-day limit imposed in September for single adults, They are sent to St. Brigid’s, a care facility set up in a former Catholic school in Manhattan.
The city has issued more than 55,000 eviction notices for single adults and, since last October, also applied the same rule for families with children.
These measures, according to Mayor Eric Adams, seek open space for new migrants and reduce projected costs. However, this has generated criticism from lawyers and activists because they believe that there is no compassion towards the vulnerable population of foreigners.
Daily, sent by EFE, between 800 and 2,800 migrants go to Santa Brígida after losing their shelters, hoping to get a place to sleep. And only 15% get a bed for the night, according to data provided by the city’s emergency management agency.
For many foreigners, the only option is to sleep in parks or the subway until they obtain a place in the center, while others turn to churches that allow them to spend the night but with the condition of leaving early.
According to the New York City Hall, more than 60% of migrants, approximately 113,000 people who have been in the city’s care, have left shelters.
