US-China Relations: Secretary of State Blinken Highlights Stability Efforts in Recent Visit

“We are working to ensure a certain stability in the relationship” between the two countries, underlined the American official in an interview with the American television channel CNN.

A conflict, Blinken added, “would not be in our interest, their interest, or that of any other party.”

Blinken, who was speaking on the sidelines of the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, made a much-anticipated visit to China last month, becoming the first secretary of state to visit the Asian country in five years and the highest-ranking U.S. official to make such a trip since President Joe Biden took office in 2021.

His visit was followed by similar trips by other senior Biden administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US climate envoy John Kerry.

“We didn’t talk much before. Now we do. We have different groups that are engaged, or about to engage, on several issues,” said the head of American diplomacy.

After days of talks with senior Chinese officials in Beijing, Blinken stressed that “progress” had been made in getting relations back on track.

Relations between the two world powers soured earlier this year when a Chinese balloon flew over the United States only to be shot down by a US fighter jet.
