Ginsburg was known for being progressive and often spoke out for women’s rights. Democratic President Clinton appointed Ginsburg a Supreme Court justice in 1993. Such an appointment is one for life.
The Chief Justice had been dealing with health problems for a long time. After being treated for cancer several times, Ginsburg announced in July this year that he had become ill again.
Trump likely chooses conservative successor
The US Supreme Court, which consists of eight justices and a chairman, already had a conservative majority before Ginsburg’s death. The Supreme Court plays a hugely important and decisive role in American politics. For example, the Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973 and same-sex marriage in 2015.
With the death of Ginsburg, President Donald Trump can appoint a new Chief Justice for the third time in his term in office. He previously appointed two Conservatives as Chief Justice: Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.
It is likely that Trump will elect a Conservative Chief Justice, strengthening the majority even further.
