US carries out airstrike targeting leader of Al-Qaeda in northwestern Syria

The United States carried out an air strike in northwestern Syria targeting an unnamed leader of Al-Qaeda, Reuters reported, citing a written statement from the US Central Command, BTA informed.

“At 11:42 a.m. local time on May 3, US Central Command forces conducted a single strike in northwest Syria targeting a senior al-Qaeda leader,” said the statement, which did not name him or specify whether the high-ranking leader of the terrorist network in question has been killed.

The strike came just days after Turkey announced that its intelligence services had killed Islamic State group chief Abu al-Hussein al-Qureishi in the same area of northern Syria held by Ankara-backed rebels.

Residents of the area – mostly from hilly plains strewn with bushes and rocks – told Reuters they heard three loud explosions, as if from airstrikes.

The White Helmets, a rescue organization in opposition-held parts of Syria, said an unidentified drone struck the northwestern province of Idlib, killing a shepherd.

The Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the former Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, controls vast territories in the northwestern part of the country, Reuters notes.
