Was it the Church’s stance on President Biden?
In the United States, conservative and liberal bishops are fighting over the church’s stance on the new President Joe Biden. One of the opponents, Chicago’s Cardinal Blase Cupich, was received by Pope Francis on Saturday.
Vatican City – 30.01.2021
Pope Francis received Chicago’s Cardinal Blase Cupich in a private audience on Saturday. The Vatican announced this without giving any details. Several media speculated that the conversation could have been about the attitude of the Catholic Church to the new administration of US President Joe Biden. The chairman of the US Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Jose Gomez, had criticized Biden’s liberal stance on abortion in a letter on Biden’s inauguration. This created controversy among the bishops of the United States.
While the conservative wing stood behind Gomez, Cupich spoke of a “rash explanation”. The Archbishop of Chicago reportedly had tried unsuccessfully to get a more agreeable text. Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark also complained that Gomez had used “very harsh words”. In the letter for the inauguration there were benevolent lines as well as several critical passages. One says, “We cannot be quiet when our country kills nearly a million unborn lives through abortions every year.” (KNA)
