US BPOM urges booster vaccines for the elderly

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that the government provide vaccines booster or the third dose of vaccine for people aged 65 years and over.

Launching Reuters on Saturday (18/09/2021), this appeal is also intended for those with congenital diseases and are susceptible to being exposed to the corona virus. The FDA also advises the government to provide a vaccine booster for health workers amid the current spike in cases in the US.

However, criticism came from various parties who considered this third vaccine useless, because the two most widely used vaccines in the US, namely the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, were very effective against the original variant, but less effective against the Delta variant.

Previously, the vaccine manufacturer, Pfizer, advised the government to provide a third vaccine, and the FDA is considering Pfizer’s request to offer a third shot of the vaccine, which the pharmaceutical company says is necessary because efficacy decreases between six and eight months after the second dose.

Pfizer submitted a preliminary study to the FDA showing that a third dose given to more than 300 people had increased their immunity levels three to five times higher than the previous injection.
