The departure of the troops from that country, who supported one of the factions of the Kurdish guerilla, in turn facing Turkey, led the prestigious General James Mattis to resign from the key position of Head of the Defense Department. The unilateral decision and contrary to the opinion of the military elite by former President Donald Trump, tried to be corrected on Thursday 25, after President Joseph Biden, authorized an air raid to punish Syrian militias supported by Iran, after the assault on a US facility in a Syrian conflict zone.
As will be recalled, there were 9 injured and a dead contractor. The return of the United States to the very complex mosaic of the already long war in Syria shows that not only is there a new style of governing in the White House, but that the presence of prominent military personnel, as well as General Lloyd Austin, at the head of the Department of Defense, implies a resumption of a leading role in one of the most dangerous geopolitical scenarios in the world. Of course, Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, Israel and the government of Syria itself, took note of the notable change in the foreign and military policy of the White House, at a time when the relationship between Europe and the United States is relaunched, under the umbrella of collaboration that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization means.
It is unlikely that troops will be displaced into Syrian territory by the United States, but this and other incursions by the Air Force, denote a substantial change in what it does in the first place, to Washington’s allies fighting to curb the Iranian ascendancy in the area and that at the same time, serve as support for the government of Bashar al-Assad. The mixture of support and interests, such as the Kurdish separatist aspirations, of those areas shared between Syria and Turkey, has caused a vector of tension in NATO, as the Ankara government – part of that organization – approaches with the Kremlin By purchasing state-of-the-art anti-aircraft weapons, it is an unprecedented event in the history of military relations between Turkey and Russia.
In this brief description of what happened in recent days in Syria and after the change of government in the United States, there is no doubt that we are facing a renewed way of defending its National Security interests. It is to be expected that in the civil cabinet of the Mexican government, they will take, and seriously, the adjustment to be in a position to foresee the next steps and scenarios in the bilateral relationship in terms of binational and, of course, regional security.
For President Biden, the next challenges are, of course, relations with North Korea and guaranteeing Iran’s return to the negotiating table, regarding uranium enrichment. I wish a prompt and healthy restoration of the Admiral Secretary of the Navy, Rafael Ojeda Durán.
