Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
United States of America block the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (PBB) to discuss the feud between Israel and Palestine which should have been held on Friday (14/5).
“There will be no Security Council meeting tomorrow. The United States does not agree to hold a video conference tomorrow,” a spokesman for the Chinese delegation to the UN told AFP, Thursday (13/5).
In order to hold a meeting, the fifteen members of the UN Security Council must agree first. If one member disagrees, the UN Security Council cannot hold a meeting.
Another diplomat said that the US wanted the meeting to be postponed to next Tuesday. The diplomat is worried that the resignation will make the UN Security Council ignore the gravity of the current situation.
The UN Security Council itself has held two closed meetings to discuss increasing tensions between Israel and Palestine in the past week.
During the meeting, the US as a strong ally of Israel prevented the UNSC efforts to issue a statement urging an end to violence.
The US representative stated that his country’s team was carrying out diplomacy behind the scenes. According to the US, the UNSC statement would be counterproductive to the efforts of his country.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has indeed sent his envoy to the Middle East, one of his agendas to urge Israel to avoid civilian casualties.
President Joe Biden has also held talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convey hope that the conflict will be resolved soon.
However, Biden stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza Strip.
According to the latest data, seven Israelis were killed in the Hamas rocket attacks, including a six year old child.
Meanwhile, Israel also continues to launch air strikes on the Gaza Strip. At least 83 lives were lost, including 17 children, and another 480 people were injured in Israeli air strikes.
