Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Huawei released the new Mate 60 Pro cellphone which caused an uproar in the Joe Biden administration. This is because the United States (US) has banned the export of 5G chip technology to Huawei.

However, the Mate 60 Pro instead comes with the 5th generation internet network. The US government suspects that Huawei is committing trade violations by continuing to use US technology.

Since its silent launch last week, Huawei has not released the specifications of the Mate 60 Pro’s innards. The only explanation Huawei has given is that the new chip in the Mate 60 Pro means it can be used to make satellite phone calls.

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is apparently equipped with a Kirin 9000 chip made by the Chinese semiconductor company, namely Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMIC).

According to TechInsights, quoted Reuters, Friday (8/9/2023), Kirin 9000 is the most advanced chip made by SMIC and is built using 7nm (nano meter) technology. This chip is proof of the Chinese government’s success in building a local chip ecosystem.

Those in China who already own the Mate 60 Pro also provide information about Huawei’s new cellphone via social media. According to users, the Mate 60 Pro has download speeds equivalent to the most premium 5G cellphones.

The launch of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro caused a stir on social media and mass media in China. Some have linked the silent launch of the Mate 60 Pro to US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s visit to Beijing.

The reason is, the US has blocked Huawei’s access to US-made chip manufacturing equipment since 2019. The blocking by the US means that Huawei can only launch a limited number of 5G devices, using the remaining chip stock.

However, TechInsights stated that Huawei has the ambition to increase production of 5G cellphones at the end of this year, armed with the capabilities of its own semiconductor design tools and SMIC’s chip production capabilities.

TechInsights analyst Dan Hutcheson stated that Huawei’s latest developments were a “slap in the face” of the United States.

“Raimando came to cool the atmosphere, and this chip [seperti China mengatakan ke AS] ‘look what we can do, we don’t need you.'” he said.
