US authorities on Sunday took to the skies in pursuit of a Cessna Citation business jet that invaded the airspace of the American capital and subsequently crashed in Virginia, Reuters reported, citing unnamed officials.
The takeoff of the fighters provoked a sonic boom that reverberated through the American capital and surrounding areas, but did not cause the business jet to crash. At the same time, the plane, allegedly, was flying on autopilot, the crew did not respond to attempts to establish contact with it.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States, after numerous reports of an “explosion” in the Washington area, told RIA Novosti that the Cessna Citation crashed in a sparsely populated area in southern Virginia. Subsequently, the agency clarified that the fall of the business jet occurred around 15.30 local time (22.30 Moscow time) in the area of the village of Montebello.
Along with this, the authorities of the surrounding cities reported that the loud sound was provoked by “an authorized flight by the US Department of Defense.” The authorities have not yet officially clarified the connection between the two events.
