The United States is trying to restore ties with the friendly countries, which appear in the highly classified US documents that have been leaked. Meanwhile, new leaked documents have also revealed classified information from Egypt.
On Tuesday, the US Secretary of Defense spoke to his South Korean counterpart about the leak. In the telephone conversation, they agreed that much of the information about South Korea is “untrue” or “modified”. They did not say which parts are incorrect or have been changed.
The documents state that the US watched a sensitive discussion in South Korea about whether or not to supply arms and ammunition to Ukraine. The leak sparked controversy in South Korea. President Yoon Suk-yeol wants all documents checked and the US to take “appropriate steps” to resolve this.
On April 26, Yoon will visit US President Joe Biden in Washington.
Documents also reveal secret Egyptian plans
The leaked documents show that the Americans also spied on some allies. Similarly, Israel and Ukraine have been embarrassed. The documents include information about Ukrainian ammunition shortages in the war against Russia and the protests in Israel against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Of Washington Post revealed on Monday that Egypt also appears in the leaked documents. According to the US newspaper, the documents state that Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi secretly planned to make and deliver 40,000 missiles to Russia. The Egyptians would like to keep this a secret “to avoid problems with the West”.
US examines documents for authenticity
The documents were initially circulated via social media Discord and 4Chan. U.S. officials declared anonymously on Friday Reuters that they thought Russia or pro-Russian groups are behind the leak.
However, several security experts let the news agency know on Sunday that they suspect an American is behind it, because many of the documents were only in American hands.
The US Department of Defense checks whether all documents are really American. The Pentagon is also investigating the possible consequences of the leak of a large number of secret government documents.
