US arrests REVil hacker for unveiling 2021 MacBook Pros

The United States Department of Justice announces that it has arrested Yaroslav Vasinskyi, a Ukrainian hacker, for his involvement in REvil. This group has carried out ransomware attacks against businesses and government entities in the United States. There is in particular a link with the MacBook Pros.

US arrest of REvil hacker

In April, REvil targeted Quanta Computer, an Apple subcontractor that assembles Macs. The hacker group has been able to recover schematics of the 2021 MacBook Pros (which were made official a few weeks ago). The leak had in particular made it possible to learn that Apple intended to add additional ports and change the design to put a notch.

REvil also extorted Apple by threatening to release additional documents if the company did not pay a ransom of $ 50 million. But a few days later, REVil withdrew its ad and all remaining documents disappeared from its site.

REvil continued its illicit activities and was responsible in May for a cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline. This has caused gasoline shortages on the East Coast of the United States. In July, REvil took advantage of a vulnerability in management software designed for Kaseya, targeting between 800 and 1,500 companies worldwide.

Another accomplice is charged

Yaroslav Vasinskyi was arrested in Poland and will be extradited to the United States. Along with this arrest, the United States Department of Justice seized $ 6.1 million received by Yevgeniy Polyanin, who was also involved in REvil and was responsible for attacks against multiple victims. Two more arrests were made in Romania, but details were not released.

Yaroslav Vasinskyi and Yevgeniy Polyanin have both been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and related activities in connection with computers, substantial counts of damage to protected computers and conspiracy to launder money. money. The former faces a maximum of 115 years in prison if convicted, while the latter could be sentenced to 145 years. Although the first is in detention, his accomplice has not been arrested and he is believed to be abroad.
