The US Army has signed a contract with Dynetics Technical Solutions to create hypersonic C-HGB units. The agreement was announced on the official website of the US Department of Defense.
What is known
The contract amounted to $428 million. The work must be completed by July 23, 2027 and will be performed at the Dynetics plant in Alabama. The deal dated July 24, 2023 was a modification of a contract worth more than $350 million, which was signed in 2019.
C-HGB or Common-Hypersonic Glide Body is a development of Sandia National Laboratories. The C-HGB bionic design glider was successfully tested during flight tests in 2011 and 2017.
In 2019, the US Army, Navy and Missile Defense Agency ordered 20 C-HGB units. In 2022, Dynetic handed over the first batch of universal hypersonic warheads to customers for new tests.
C-HGB is a joint program between the US Navy and the US Army. The project will allow services to use a universal projectile in their Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) and Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) hypersonic weapons, respectively.
The US Army deployed the LRHW during the winter. Two launchers with a total salvo of four hypersonic missiles were deployed to Cape Canaveral, Florida. LRHW became part of the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force long-range fires battalion, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment.
The hypersonic missile consists of a booster and a C-HGB glider, which separates from the main unit and attacks the target. One LRWH battery will include four launchers with a total salvo of eight missiles. The launch range will be up to 2775 km.
As for the US Navy, in the middle of this decade, the service equips the first Zumwalt-class destroyer with hypersonic weapons. Lockheed Martin has already received $ 1.2 billion for this. In the future, hypersonic missiles will appear in Virginia-class submarines.
