The US Army is preparing for battles against China and Russia by modernizing existing weapons and introducing completely new models – tanks, infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and robotic combat vehicles. They will prepare Washington for the “war of the future,” reports The National Interest.
The US Army introduced 24 new systems in 2023, with similar progress expected in 2024. Key developments include the M10 Booker tank with a 105 mm main gun and other heavy weapons, and the XM30 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) with increased lethality and survivability, planned to replace the aging M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. In addition, the US Army is exploring the capabilities of unmanned combat vehicles, in particular the RCV-Light, which is also under development.
The M10 Booker’s weapons are capable of disabling enemy light armored vehicles or even a tank with a successful shot, the author notes. Weighing around 40 tonnes, the M10 Booker will be able to reach a top speed of 45mph and travel up to 350 miles before refueling.
Promising XM30 infantry fighting vehicle, according to the US Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Douglas Bush, will be even more lethal than the M2 Bradley. It will have a light machine gun and anti-tank missiles, but the modular design will allow the vehicle to be equipped with new systems as they become available, “which will provide an overwhelming advantage.”
Finally, the RCV-Light robotic combat vehicle will be responsible for reconnaissance and fire support. True, the article notes, it will need reliable electronic warfare systems so that it can operate on the front lines.
Last year, the US Army selected the American companies Rheinmetall Vehicles and General Dynamics Land Systems as contractors from five applicants. The companies now have a $1.6 billion contract to deliver prototypes by the end of 2024. As for other developments, the army wants to receive them before the end of the decade, concludes the author of The National Interest.
